Spicing up Khutbah Jumaat? Can ...?

The truth is, more often than not khutbah Jumaat, week in and week out, do send many people to sleep. Paling tidak pun most will day dream rather than paying attention to the content of the khutbah.. and don't me get started on how noisy the kids can be at the back of the congregation.
Too bad really and this is what we get if an Imam is required to read a prepared khutbah that simply does not interest many people (think RTM's talk show). Yeah, maybe they can't do much about it, but then again the Imams can certainly spice up his sermon a little.. here and there. Just to jolt the jemaah...like what this one Imam, apparently in mid-west USA, who got up after one Friday prayers and announced to the people:
"I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program. The bad news is, it's still out there in your pockets."
But then again, boleh ker our Imams say something like this? Silap haribulan kena buang kerja. Eh, tak payah lar ekk?

Salam bro,

Nice. And I believe some of our imams can! Take the former Imam 2 Masjid Subang Jaya, Ustaz Ridwan. He has, at one point of time or another, said something similar like that. Tapi dalam loghat orang ganu le :)

Salam Mior,
Tentu Imam boleh guna budi bicara kot? Saya ada solat Jumaat di sebuah surau yang telah diguna untuk solat Jumaat, di satu taman di Seremban. Walau pun kecil tapi ramai Jemaah. Ketika kutbah, Imam tak guna skrip pun. Semasa kutbah dia boleh jerit orang berniaga diluar surau tu supaya berhenti berniaga sampai dua kali.

bg mior,

fine example you got there brader. RTM talkshow. hahaha...thats a real classic. i can foresee that in 10 years time, there will still be the same old boring talkshow on primetime.

macam bolasepak negara, masih dan sentiasa di takuk lama!

Your writing remind me to the khutbah in IIUM masjid, usually presented in more than 1 language (usually English or Malay, sometimes Malay) and presented by professor or lecturers in quite interesting way. Tp kdg2 ada jugak yg boring... I remember sometimes they also invite imam or presenter from other country like Saudi, or even US. I like it when Moez (from US I think) presented the khutbah and it's so enlightened and fresh.

Mior,
In Kelantan we have two versions. One is neutral as prepared by Jabatan Agama Islam while the other has a political flavour since it is provided bu a political party. So just hear whatever you like to hear and reject what you think is not.

Pak mior:

Lets put is this way: All govt appointed imams will baca khutbah( and not berkhutbah).

Is you find some suraus sermoning their own topics, its because they are beyond the Jabatan Ugama's reach or the imams are 'recalcitrants'. Maybe they are suraus owned by PAS or some religious movements. But once the Jabatan Ugama knows about this, they will come down hard on this small suraus and masjids.

Am not suprised many fell asleep. I did too. Almost every Friday. And many who didn't get to sleep, if you ask them what was the khutbah all about?, well 99% wouldn't know head or tail. That is still okay.
What if I tell you, the khatibs themselves most of the time couldn't undestand what they are reading!! Its yrue.I'm not pulling anyones legs here.

Why not today or the next Friday, you get hold of the khatib/imaam and ask him!!

Everytime my sons balik dari sembahyang jumaat I asked him to tell me about the khutbah. He can't seemed to recall anything.Asked him the topic pun...Dia kata tak tau.

You are right... maybe it is sooo bored that nothing goes into his head.

Shah,
Come to think of it, you are right bro? In fact, zaman2 reformasi dulu, ramai imam di Suang Jaya and USj nih yang rather outspoken... not necessary when talking about political issues but everything.

Pak Zabs,
Betul Pak, kat sini dulupun pernah terjadi Pak Imam perli orang dok berniaga kat luar...

Kerp bro,
Can't imagine any other example lah! Just watching their shows make you feel old... hehehe

Nafastari,
Never had the opportunity to solat Jumaat at IIU campus... but in the mid 80's while I was in UM, the Bus UM will ferry us students without motorbikes (dulu mana ada students bawak kereta sangat)to Masjid Al-Malik Faisal in SS 16, PJ, then UIA punya campus induk for solat jumaat. Can't remember a thing about the khutbah though.

Salam Pak Zawi,
Boleh ya macam tu Pak? oops bukan kat Selangor... heheh

Suria,
Jangankan your sons, orang tua ni pun kala melangkah keluar masjid pun kekadang sudah lupa apa bicara pak Imam sebentar tadi... tapi kekadang memang kerana usia tua kot... pelupa.

Tok Doc,
Ya lar, how very true... I believe most of the Tok Khatib just go through the motion... monotonously... no wonder boring like hell.
I was in Melaka thelast few days... thought of calling you but it was really a tight schedule sampai makan pun tak sempat. Some other day perhaps, InsyaAllah.

It should be done. At least, they can get those who tiba masjid kat akhir kutbah untuk sembahyang Jumaat, dengan alasan tak nak tertidur dalam masjid waktu tu (justification lah ni), will be kept awake for the sermon.
Mana ways to skin a cat, kan?

mior, we are lucky. Where we go for our prayers and tazkirahs, we have very young ustazs and imams. And certainly they are able to keep us awake and interested.

Fauziah,
Gulp, I'm one those of the people who more often than not arrive till the very last minute... somehow it's not just about the khutbah but also I tak boleh duduk bersila lelama... kebas kaki. Al maklumla badan berat.. hehe

Mior Azhar said...

Kak Teh,
Yeah, here in Subang Jaya, there used to be many young Imams who came to lead the solat Jumaat. Once, about six years ago, the Masjid Al Falakh here invited this one Ustaz from utara, think orang Kedah kot, who came and mesmerised us all with his khutbah.. siap ngan his booming voice. Of course he preached without using the JAIS prepared sermon. Sah tak dak sapa yang tidoq that day. Can't remember his name though.

Mior Azhar said...

Pak Payne,
I salute you brother. Kita kat sini yang faham ya amat2 apa kata Tuan Imam pun boleh tidor.Lemahnya...Astaghfirullah!

Nafastari said...

Mungkin boleh tidur dulu sekejap sebelum ke masjid. Opsss! Tapi u all kat KL mana boleh buat macam tu, Jumaat kerja..

Tapi masa keje sebelah sana dulu I xde la plak tido masa khutbah. Kalao ada ngantuk pun tahan la skit.. bukan lama pun khutbah. Pernah dgr tak, apa sebab solat jumaat jadi 2 rakaat je, instead of 4 for zohr. Because the another two are replaced with the khutbah..

Surprised to hear that from an imam! Our pastor said the very same thing to us not that long ago! :-)

Followed the link to your blog thru Zawi's.

Khatib from utara in Subang Jaya. I can only think of 2 who are fearless: Ustaz Shahril Long or Ustaz Sobri Arshad.Ah..haven't met them for years now.

Mior Azhar said...

Nafastari,
Yes, I remembered ustaz masa Form 2 dulu telling us the reason kenapa solat Jumaat jadik 2 rakaat. Thanks for the reminder.

Puteri,
Thanks for visiting

Salam Mior

This I wrote to a friend on the 2nd Nov.07. How colourful our Friday's sermon was on that day.

I've just come back from the Friday's prayer at the Naval Base
Mosque. Its been a long time since I have been there, normally I would
have my friday's prayer done at the Teluk Mosque which was quite convenience for me in some days but not this friday as the traffic along the Daeng Selaili Road was jammed pack with cars. So I was quite surprised with the new set up that they have in the Naval Base Mosque. Hey..! they have large screen here too, mate.

And the title that I read on the big screen is " Ahlak Pemuda & Pemudi kita ".I did not really pay any attention to the screen as the imam was reading his sermon but at the corner of my eyes,I could not figured why my neighbor attention was riveted at the screen. So there it was ,as the Imam was reading the sermon on the the subject matter, they have the visual presentation on the big screen,...... so what come out when male and female came together out of wedlock, it should be a baby, no it's not in our society in our now so called Islam Hadhari society , its' the fetuses..... an unwanted fetuses,in the rubbish bin, garbage area,at the road side in a bag, you name it and they have it on the screen. I would thanks god that ,on this particular day they decided only to show the unwanted fetuses and not newly born ,alive and kicking innocent babies at the foot of the tree,at the door of houses and stair of the mosques and temples and they are the lucky ones. And also not to show the dead babies that were flushed through the toilets, thrown onto the streets and left at the rubbish dump for the dogs. What kind of youths that we have brought up today......................God forgive us.

Well I think our society have become so immune to that kind of gruesome scenery but what come next on the big screen really shook me to the core, what's happening to our world, our civilized world, the so called free world, it showed somewhere in the world ,those who practiced "one child policy" did to their unwanted aborted fetuses.......they MADE SOUP out of it , in one scene they showed a group of ten sharing a big bowl of fetuses soup and one was barbecued and presented on a plate at the table. Guys........, Guys........ a barbecued fetuses surrounded by the ten with ketchup, chily sauce, folk and knife and all just like we're having our barbecued lamb or pike on the table, without guilt showed in their faces ........................ ...........!.Okay in some society they will eat any thing... elephants, cats, rats ...... dogs and what have you, but this time it beyond explanation at least to me.... .............................................!

In the last scene, they showed how our Mat Rempit,in his glory, was found at the road side,in one scene they have his body sprawled on the road minus his head (shouldn't his legs go the other way), blood all over the body, then they showed his head in some bushes somewhere.

What intrigued me was that , shouldn't he in his pinnacle should died with a smile and big grin on his face (like our spaceman) or at least a Victory sign with his hand but instead in death his just protruded his tongue at you.
